Previous Student Short Film Response

After Then:
https://youtu.be/dA9HIMUyhGo

This was last years Media Class' work. It starts off with the sound of a heart beat until it is interrupted by the sound of a phone alarm that wakes up the boy called Lewis. He then gets up and gets ready for the day. He then notices that his dog isn't at home, nor is any else. He then starts to walk out the house and into a park. It becomes very clear that there is no one else in the world but him, but we do not know why. As the film goes on it shows him trying to contact people but they do not answer, so he becomes scared and frustrated and then sits on a park bench. The scene then cuts to another boy waking up at the same house and goes to wake up his friend but there is no response, he than is frantically trying to wake Lewis up until he realises that he has died and he then runs off. There is then a close up of Lewis with non diegetic sound and the camera turns to a note addressed to his family with an empty packet of pills next to it. It is then clear that Lewis has committed suicide and the world he was in before was actually him in his own world once he had died.

The Equilibrium is Lewis waking up and getting ready for the day which seems normal. The significant event is realising he is all on his own as his dog isn't there and his friend won't pick up the phone. Recognition by Hero is he begins to search for people in the park. There isn't an attempt to repair as he does not realise that theres something wrong with him. The New Equilibrium is finding out that he has committed suicide which then makes the rest of the story come together and make sense.

The first scene is a boy in his room, who then begins texting his friends about what they will do that day. The boy then picks up his things, grabs a jacket and goes downstairs. The mum is making food and the boy ignores her and sits down by the table. He then address' his mum as Noa, and demands to have money as he is going out. The mum then says how she spent two hours making chicken for him and he then insults her food and disrespects her by saying it is worse than a fast food place called five guys. The mum then slaps the son with her wooden spoon which is clearly brought on by built up tension which then urges the son to slap his mum very aggressively. He then steals some money and begins to roll a cigarette. The mum is understandably in tears and begins to turn on all the gas by the stove and opens the oven door which the boy does not see but continues to shout abuse to her. Noa then gets her shoes on and leaves the house, but we then experience a flash back that shows her turning the gas on from the main pipes which shows she's been planning on killing him for a while. The last scene shows the boy put the lighter to the cigarette and is about to light it when everything goes black.

The Equilibrium is the boy texting his friend on where to get food. The significant event is when the son disrespects his mum along with her cooking. The recognition by hero is when Noa hits the son. Attempt to repair is when Noa turns on all the gas on the stove. The new equilibrium is when he lights the cigarette as he has died and is out of Noa's life.
